The Artists lived and worked in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. They were largely financed by patrons and worked together with other members of the group who ideally had concordant artistic tastes.

UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site: Grube Messel

The Messel pit (“Grube Messel”) is a disused quarry near the village of Messel about 9 km from Darmstadt.

  • Its abundance of well-preserved fossils dating from the middle of the Eocene has a significant geological and scientific importance
  • Over 1000 species of plants and animals have been found at the site
  • After almost becoming a landfill, strong local resistance eventually stopped these plans and the Messel pit was declared a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site on December 9th, 1995
  • Significant scientific discoveries about the early evolution of mammals and birds are still being made at the Messel pit, and the site has increasingly become a tourist site as well.

Facts about the State Museum of Hessen
  • The State Museum of Hessen is a large multidisciplinary museum in Darmstadt, Germany.
  • It exhibits Rembrandt, Beuys, a primeval horse and a mastodon under the slogan “The whole world under one roof”.
  • one of the oldest public museums in Germany (~80,000 visitors/year; 1.35 million objects).
  • Similar institutions in Europe are the Universalmuseum Joanneum in Graz and the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh.

The nearest airport and also best option to arrive by plane is Frankfurt Airport (FRA).
